Y Knot Goes To School

In September of 2004, Vicki and John began presenting a new program in both the Limestone and Algonquin District School Boards. The purpose of the program is to provide a fun, learning opportunity where students explore the abilities of people with physical disabilities, while demonstrating that there are no limitations, that any thing is possible with hard work and determination.

The program involves a Power Point presentation at the school, to the entire student body, and then a small group of students, selected by the school attends the Kingston Family YMCA, Beechgrove Campus for an opportunity to participate in an inclusive environment.

Time is spent in the gym exploring, different disabilities and coping methods. Athletes participate in a game of Goal Ball (a blind sport played up to the Paralympic level), Pillow Polo and a wheelchair basketball game. Participants then move to the pool where they explore how people with different disabilities cope in the pool environment, and then enjoy a recreational swim.

Participants leave the Y having learned that there are no limitations as to what people with physical disabilities can accomplish, but they also leave understanding that this applies to them as well. Nothing is impossible with hard work and determination.
